The Oldest Sport in North America

Origins

Lacrosse has its origins in a tribal game played by Eastern Woodlands Native Americans and by some Plains Indian tribes in what is now the United States of America and Canada. Lacrosse is regarded as the oldest sport played on the North American continent. The game was extensively modified by European settlers to create its current collegiate and professional form. The first recorded women’s game was played in Scotland in 1890 and Rosabelle Sinclair started a girls’ lacrosse team at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore in 1926, the first team in the United States. In 1935, the U.S. sent a touring team to England and continued to do so for half a century until the first women’s world championship was held in 1982, resulting in the first of a record eight world championships for the United States.
